That's one of the answers that the movie, Slumdog Millionaire asks. The question sounds something like this -
Jamal Malik is one question away from winning 20 million rupees and how did he do it?
A. He cheated.
B. He's lucky.
C. He's a genius.
D. It is written.
Just went to watch it with Jane today. It was a meaningful and towards a certain extent brutal film. Initially, I thought that it's going to be a cry cry one. But, nah my eyes were dry. It is actually more of a love story than a story illustrating the poverty a boy faces, towards the end. The motif of the young man to join the contest all Indians in India watch is very simple - is to be seen by "the most beautiful woman in the world".
It kicked-off of with a boring and subtle note and in fact, it was a little confusing for me. Things got worse when the Indian actors (excluding the leading actor, Dev Patel - he's a British by the way) started to speak English. It's like a celebrity donning too much make-up that you couldn't even recognise her. They have such a saturated Hindi accent that I couldn't digest their English dialogue. But, I could understand their Hindi. Lol... Why? Because they provide subtitle for the Hindi dialogue. And here is the bizarre part - They didn't provide sub for the English dialogue.
The plot beginning to get interesting when the romantic bits popped up and there you go again, a typical Bollywood-chum-Hollywood love story. I guess in the end, the part that I agree the most is when the leading actress answered that the people watch "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" is because it gives them a route to escape when she was asked by Jamal, of why people in India love this show. Escape from poverty, escape from brutality and escape from oppression. And of course, the movie ended in a classic, typical Bollywood style. Gosh, you must watch the ending. I'll leave you to figure out the ending.
